New independent remedial school
opened in January 2007

Oakley House is a small specialist school catering for children who have specific or generalised learning difficulties, which prevent them from achieving success in a mainstream school environment.

The school's aim is to provide a complete education whilst enabling children to master basic literacy and numeracy skills to a point where they can reach their potential in a mainstream classroom. Our priority is to restore confidence and to develop a positive attitude to learning. We do this by providing a happy atmosphere with support and understanding for each child.

At Oakley House every teacher's objective is to remedy each child's weaknesses as far as they can, focusing on the following:

  • To rebuild self esteem
  • To foster an enjoyment of learning
  • To provide a complete education
  • To help each child identify his or her own goals and targets
  • To identify and reach potential in strengths
  • To remedy weaknesses
  • To improve language skills
  • To reach a functional reading age (11 years) as soon as possible
  • To teach strategies and skills to assist with spelling
  • To achieve his or her potential in, and to foster an enjoyment of mathematics
  • To motivate each child
  • To stretch without overstretching
  • To return pupils to mainstream schooling when ready
Oakley House offers:
  • Small classes of not more than 10 children per class to ensure individual attention and a caring and supportive environment.
  • Individual programmes of learning in literacy and numeracy on a one-to-one basis will be structured to suit each child's needs.
  • The National Curriculum is followed in a normal classroom setting, in addition to which, each child has individual support for specific areas of difficulty.
  • Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy, on an individual basis or in small groups, is arranged for those children who need it.

We are located in Diep River, Cape Town.
